The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge will temporarily close the visitor center to address warranty items in the exhibit area and correct some issues with the facility’s geothermal system.The facility will close to the public at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4th and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22nd.For more information, contact the La Crosse District Office at (608) 779-2399 or visit http://www.fws.gov/refuge/upper_mississippi_river/. Before and following the temporary closure, visitor center hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and one Saturday each month during winter for special programs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The January special program will be held January 26th and there will be a separate press release about the family activities. We will be closed on all federal holidays.

A year round resident on the refuge however numbers soar during the winter. Look below locks and dams where the river is not frozen. Aerial displays and pair bonding are best viewed from January through March. In winter, over 1,000 bald eagles grab fish,ducks or coots in the open water.
