Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge is currently closed to the public. A rare opportunity to visit the Karl E. Mundt is offered as part of the Annual South Dakota Birding Festival at Fort Randall in May.
Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The best opportunities for bird watching are between April 1 and October 15.
Foot trails on Atkins Waterfowl Production Area and the Owens Bay Unit of Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge provide excellent opportunities of wildlife observation and photography. All waterfowl production areas on the Complex are open to hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education and interpretation.
