The Hidden Life of the Understory

What's Beneath the Canopy?

We’re excited to share that Ranger Taymar is back at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge! This interpretive program will kick off the start of her Saturday ranger-led hikes, so join her for this first program titled, “The Hidden Life of the Understory” as she guides you through an immersive and creative outdoor experience!

Step into nature and uncover the hidden world that thrives just beneath the forest canopy! This engaging, ranger-led program begins at Nature’s Classroom at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and is perfect for nature lovers of all ages.

We’ll start by crafting your very own nature journal, which you’ll use to document discoveries throughout the program. From there, enjoy a gentle, guided walk along the Plum Orchard Pond Trail, where we’ll explore the forest’s understory— an often-overlooked ecosystem full of life, movement, and mystery. Along the way, you’ll learn about the animals, plants, and environmental factors that shape this unique layer of the forest.

The program wraps up with a quiet moment to sit, observe, and reflect. We’ll provide thoughtful journal prompts to encourage creativity and deeper connection with the natural world.

For a comfortable experience, we recommend:

  • Wearing closed-toe shoes
  • Bringing bug spray and sunscreen
  • Carrying a water bottle

See you there!
