The Gall of these Wasps!

Have you ever seen weird growths sticking out of plants and wondered what they are? They may have been galls, a very special structure structure
Something temporarily or permanently constructed, built, or placed; and constructed of natural or manufactured parts including, but not limited to, a building, shed, cabin, porch, bridge, walkway, stair steps, sign, landing, platform, dock, rack, fence, telecommunication device, antennae, fish cleaning table, satellite dish/mount, or well head.

Learn more about structure
which grows because of the interaction between a plant and an insect who lays eggs inside the plant. Galls grow in all shapes and sizes and they all provide homes for developing insects.

There are many different types of galls able to be seen at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and even more that aren't! This science lecture will give an introduction to the weird and beautiful world of galls and the insects who cause them. This program is intended for people who can sit still and listen and enjoy the science, if your adults or children can't sit still quietly for long periods of time this may not be the best program for you.

We hope you have the gall to come!
