About Karlin Itchoak

Karlin serves as the Assistant Regional Director for the National Wildlife Refuge System in the Alaska Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He was born and raised in Nome, Alaska and has participated in subsistence hunting for whales, walrus, seals, caribou, moose and fish. Karlin previously served as Alaska Regional Director for The Wilderness Society, where he led conservation efforts to safeguard Alaska’s vast lands, rich natural resources and legacy, and unique biodiversity for current and future generations of Americans. He also worked at Kawerak, Inc., supporting Tribal self-determination; served as President of the Nome Eskimo Community Tribal Council; and was Chief Administrative and Legal Officer at Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation, managing corporate strategy, governance, and sustainable Arctic energy development. He holds B.A. degrees in Political Science and Alaska Native Studies from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law with a focus on Environmental and Tribal Law. After law school, Karlin served as a Judicial Law Clerk for Alaska Supreme Court Chief Justice, Alexander O. Bryner. He then became a Judicial Law Clerk and Deputy Magistrate for Alaska Superior Court Judge, Ben Esch, in Nome.
