Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge offers expansive prairie landscapes, glacial hills, and scattered wetlands that create excellent opportunities for wildlife and nature photography. The Refuge’s mix of native prairie, pothole wetlands, and wooded draws provides a variety of natural settings for capturing mammals, prairie plants, and seasonal scenery. Early mornings and evenings often offer the best light and increased wildlife activity, with chances to photograph deer or moose near wetland edges, as well as smaller mammals in open prairie settings. Throughout the year, changing seasons bring dramatic shifts in colors and textures—from spring wildflowers to winter’s sweeping, snow-covered hills. Visitors are welcome to explore open areas of the Refuge on foot to find unique vantage points and natural subjects.
