Visit Us

National wildlife refuges offer us all a chance to unplug from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with our natural surroundings. Washita National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife-dependent recreation. Come hike our trails, drive the auto tour route, hunt for dove and quail, catch a fish or photograph wildlife.

The entire refuge is closed to all entry during the following controlled hunts:

Points of Interest

Let our staff at the visitor contact station help you plan your visit! This is a great starting point for visitors to become more familiar with the refuge and the wildlife that live here. Visitors can obtain maps and brochures at the refuge headquarters.

What To Do

If you have 15-minutes.

  • Try your hand identifying tracks at the Owl Cove recreation area or visit the overlook at the refuge headquarters.

If you have one hour.

  • Drive the auto tour route.

If you have half a day or more.

  • Spend the day fishing at one of the designated fishing areas at Turkey Flats or Lakeview recreation areas.

Know Before You Go

Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and your fishing pole to enjoy a day of fishing and wildlife viewing at the refuge.

Visitor Tips

  • Dawn and dusk are the best times to see wildlife.
  • In warmer seasons, few animals are moving on hot summer afternoons or on windy days.
  • Observe from the sidelines. Leave “abandoned” young animals alone. A parent is probably close by waiting for you to leave.
  • Don’t offer snacks to wildlife; your lunch could disrupt the wildlife’s digestive systems.
  • Try sitting quietly in one location. Let wildlife get used to your presence. Many animals that have hidden will reappear once they think you are gone.
  • Walk quietly in designated areas, being aware of sounds and smells. Often you will hear more than you will see.
  • Teach children quiet observation. Other wildlife watchers will appreciate your consideration.
  • Look for animal signs. Tracks, scat, feathers, and nests left behind often tell interesting stories.

Activities

Hunting, fishing, birding, and photography are some of the many ways to enjoy the refuge.

Trails

A few short walking trails at Washita National Wildlife Refuge allow visitors to access a variety of areas within the refuge.
