The District has 200 waterfowl production areas that are open to public uses. The following wildlife-dependent recreational activities are allowed on these areas:
- Hunting
- Fishing
- Trapping
- Wildlife observation
- Photography
- Environmental education
- Interpretation
Hunting and ice fishing are two of the most frequent activities on waterfowl production areas. Most hunting seasons open in the fall, making this the most popular time of year for waterfowl production area visitation. Waterfowl production areas in the District range in size from 0.32 acres (McIntosh PDL 1C) to 1,757 acres (Lazy M). These waterfowl production areas are spread throughout the four counties and are open to wildlife-dependent recreational activities year-round.

Services
We are the first resource for landowners and others for questions about U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands in Dickey, LaMoure, Logan, and McIntosh counties.
Wetland Management Districts are responsible for overseeing public lands management and reviewing and permitting activities on Waterfowl Production Areas, such as:
- grazing
- haying
- research
...and for administering conservation easements. We:
- refer private landowners for technical and financial assistance with habitat projects on their property
- determine eligibility, answer questions, and begin the process for a landowner to receive an offer for a new conservation easement
- answer questions about existing easements
- work with project developers to maintain compliance on lands with conservation easements in their project area
Additionally, we keep current brochures, maps, identification guides, and North Dakota hunting and fishing information guides at our office in Kulm. These are available free of charge.
About
The Kulm Wetland Management District was established in July 1971 and is located in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America. The District oversees conservation easements on over 280,000 acres of grasslands and wetlands across Dickey, LaMoure, Logan, and McIntosh counties. We also manage habitat on 45,000 acres of waterfowl production areas that are open to the public. Our mission is to ensure the long-term viability of breeding waterfowl populations while also considering the needs of other migratory birds and wildlife.
