Expanded Fishing Opportunity Opens for 2021-2022 Season

Fishing Expansion Package for Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expanding fishing opportunities on Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) for the 2021-2022 fishing season. In order to offer additional compatible fishing opportunities, the 2.2-mile section of Deep Creek’s banks that are within the Refuge will now be open to night fishing. We expect that most night fishing will occur for burbot in the winter months, when these fish aggregate at the mouth of Deep Creek and are most active. Fishing will be in accordance with Idaho Department of Fish and Game fishing regulations. Access will be restricted to use of established Refuge parking areas, with no parking permitted along roadsides. From parking areas, anglers may navigate on foot to the banks of Deep Creek. Anglers may also access Deep Creek by walking on the banks from the public boat ramp located off-Refuge. Launching or landing of boats on the Refuge-owned banks of Deep Creek will continue to be prohibited.
