Spend some time exploring with us during one of our summer programs!

Programs

Registration for summer programs begins Tuesday, April 16th by calling (757)301-7329 ext.3106. If we are unable to answer your call please leave a message. We will answer messages in the order they are received.

Registration is required for summer programs, unless otherwise noted. Registration begins Tuesday, April 16th.

 

Nature Explorers: A five-day program for children ages 10-13. We will discover how to fish, identify animals and protect wildlife. At the end of the week participants will receive a Junior Refuge Manager patch, a nature journal and a poster. This program will run July 29 - August 2 (9:00am-12:00pm). Call (757)301-7329 ext.3106 to register. Please plan to attend all five days of this day camp program.

Fishing Clinics: The Great Bridge Fisherman's Association will host free saltwater fishing clinics for children ages 7-15. An adult must accompany participating children. Clinics run 9:30am to 11:30am on June 27, July 11, July 25 and August 8. Call (757)301-7329 ext.3106 to register. Spots fill quickly - please call early!

Struggles in the Sand: The life of a sea turtle begins with a struggle in the sand. Explore with us the difficulties faced by these spectacular creatures as they begin life's journey. This free one-hour family program will be offered at 2:00pm on June 21, July 5, July 19, August 2, August 16 and August 30.

Wildlife Art: Back by popular demand! Talented local artists will host workshops for children ages 7-15 at Back Bay NWR to help young nature lovers explore wildlife through painting. Workshops will be held at 2:00pm on June 22, July 6, July 20 and August 3 and August 17. All supplies are provided, but are limited. Call (757)301-7329 ext.3106 to register.

Photo Workshops: Join a local photographer to learn the basics of nature photography at the wildlife refuge. Any camera, from a cell phone to a DSLR are welcome. Sessions will be held at 9:00am on Saturday, June 22 (focus on the bay environment), Saturday, July 27 (focus on the bay environment) and  Saturday, August 31 (focus on the beach environment. Evening Tram Tours: A special tram tour around Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. This trip will cover the grounds of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and focus on wildlife and history. Evening Tram Tours will run every Friday from June 15 - August 30. Reservations are necessary for these trips by calling (757)301-7329 ext.3106.  

Back Bay Saturdays: The refuge will host events on most Saturdays during the summer. Check out the Back Bay Saturdays page for details!

Nature Journaling: Start your journaling experience with us as we use writing and drawing to explore and document our natural world. No experience is necessary. All participants will receive a nature journal to take home and continue their personal journey through journaling. Date: Thursday, August 29 at 10:00am (ages 10-15).  Call to sign up at (757)301-7329 ext.3106.

Butterflies!: The Butterfly Society of Virginia will share their experiences raising caterpillars and teaching us the importance of these special pollinators to our environment. Live caterpillars will be present. Join us on August 10 from 11:00am-2:00pm!

Blue Goose Express: Blue Goose Wildife Trams will run regularly from April - October. See the Blue Goose Wildlife Tram page for further schedule, fee and reservation details.


There is no cost for the summer programs (except the Blue Goose Wildlife Tram) but a $5.00 entrance fee to the wildlife refuge does apply (a $15.00 year-long pass is also available; all America the Beautiful passes and the Federal Duck Stamp are also honored).
