ETWP; Proposed Endangered or Threatened Status for Fourteen Plant Taxa From the Hawaiian Islands

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) proposes endangered status pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act), for 13 plant taxa--Achyranthes mutica (No common name (NCN)), Cenchrus agrimonioides (kamanomano), Cyanea grimesiana ssp. grimesiana (haha), Cyperus trachysanthos (pu`uka`a), Euphorbia haeleeleana (NCN), Isodendrion laurifolium (aupaka), Panicum niihauense (lau `ehu), Phyllostegia parviflora (NCN), Platanthera holochila (NCN), Sanicula purpurea (NCN), Schiedea hookeri (NCN), Schiedea kauaiensis (NCN), and Schiedea nuttallii (NCN). The Service also proposes threatened status for Isodendrion longifolium (aupaka). The 14 taxa are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and are now known from one or more of the following Hawaiian Islands--Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii. The 14 plant taxa and their habitats have been variously affected or are currently threatened by one or more of the following--competition, predation, or habitat degradation from alien species, human impacts, fire, and natural disasters. This proposal, if made final, would implement the Federal protection provisions provided by the Act.
