This summer for America’s Wild Read the USFWS Library is featuring an inspiring and powerful story, Stronghold: One Man’s Quest to Save the World’s Wild Salmon by Tucker Malarkey.

Guido Rahr is an elite fly fisherman who is captivated by salmon and determined that they are “the most spectacular fish on earth” because of their wildness, resilience, and determination to live.  When the salmon runs of the Pacific Northwest began to decline, that changed everything for Guido.

An improbable and exciting story, Stronghold takes us on a wild adventure, from Oregon to Alaska to the one of the world’s last remaining salmon strongholds in the Russian Far East.

Tucker Malarkey has written in Stronghold a call to action for a sustainable future, an engaging work of natural history, and an eye-opening account of an extraordinary keystone species.

If you are an FWS employee, you can access an eBook of Stronghold via this link. FWS employees may also email catherine_blalack@fws.gov to borrow a print copy as available. For the general public, Stronghold can be found at your local library or bookstore.
