Butterfly Survey of Big Oaks

This event could be cancelled due to COVID conditions. The 2022 Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge Butterfly Count will be Saturday, August 6. This will be the 24th year of the count.

Everyone is welcome! Experts are embedded in each team to help the less experienced at identification learn.

Participants will need to gather at 8 am at the refuge office to view a mandatory safety video and sign a liability waiver. If you have already watched the video for 2022, please arrive by 8:20 am.

When teams leave the office they go to different areas of the refuge to count butterflies and usually do not return until they are finished counting. Ending time is around 4:30-5:00 pm for all-day teams and noon to 1pm for half-day team(s). Most teams will NOT have access to a restroom facility. You will need to bring lunch, snacks, insect repellent, hats, and water. Wear clothing/shoes suitable for field work.

If you would like to help with the count or have questions please contact the refuge at 812-273-0783.
