As of January 2013, there are 561 national wildlife refuges spanning all 50 states and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Minor Outlying Islands. More than 420 of these refuges are open to the public, and more than 350 have hunt programs.
The Service also has 38 Wetland Management Districts that manage thousands of small natural wetlands and grasslands located in the Prairie Pothole Region states of Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. These small wetlands and grasslands provide breeding, resting, and nesting habitat for millions of waterfowl, shorebirds, grassland birds, and other wildlife.
The National Wildlife Refuge System manages over 150 million acres of lands, submerged lands, and waters, including nearly 18 million acres in the lower 48 states. Some refuges have complex boundaries overlapping multiple states, and these refuges may or may not appear in every state on these maps.
