HORICON MARSH At over 33,000 acres in size, Horicon Marsh is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States. The marsh provides habitat for endangered species and is a critical rest stop for thousands of migrating ducks and Canada geese. It is recognized as a Wetland of International Importance, as both Globally and State Important Bird Areas and is also a unit of the Ice Age Scientific Reserve. HORICON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE The northern two-thirds of Horicon Marsh is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as the 22,000 acre Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The southern third of the marsh is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area. *News Release* New Project Leader for the Horicon/Leopold Complex! Full news release New Project Leader Horicon/Leopold Complex (167 KB, pdf) Steven (Steve) J. Lenz recently assumed the role of Project Leader for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Horicon/Leopold Complex. For the last 16 years, he has been the District Manager of the Leopold Wetland Management District (WMD) based out of Portage, WI with the responsibility of managing the habitat for wildlife on waterfowl production areas (WPAs) located in 17 counties throughout Wisconsin. The Horicon Complex is comprised of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge (22,000 acres) in Mayville, WI; the Fox River National Wildlife Refuge (1,054 acres) in Montello, WI; and the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge (330 acres) and Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge (27 acres) located in Lake Michigan near Washington Island, WI. After the retirement of Horicon’s former Project Leader, the existing Horicon Complex was combined (complexed) with the Leopold Wetland Management District – 57 waterfowl production areas (13,000 acres total) with Steve as the new Project Leader for both stations. He will oversee twenty-two staff who will work to manage wildlife, habitat, and recreational opportunities on these areas within the complex.
