Birding

At Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge

Birding is permitted year‑round in all open public use areas, nature trails, and along the auto tour route. A viewing scope at the Refuge headquarters offers close‑up views of waterfowl on Middle Des Lacs Lake. More than 250 bird species have been documented on the refuge, making it an excellent destination for birdwatchers throughout the year.

Spring

Migrating waterfowl arrive in large numbers, and western grebes begin their dramatic courtship displays on the lakes. Several other grebe species also nest on the refuge.

Summer

Ducks, geese, shorebirds, and a variety of marsh‑nesting and upland birds are common throughout the wetlands and surrounding habitats. American white pelicans are often present and can be seen soaring overhead or gathering in groups on open water. Many waterfowl raise broods during this time of year, and giant Canada geese are especially productive, typically raising 150–200 young each summer.

Fall

The refuge becomes a major stopover along the Central Flyway, with impressive movements of ducks and geese as they gather on the lakes and nearby fields.

With its mix of lakes, marshes, and uplands, Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge offers outstanding birding opportunities in every season.
