Welcome!
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (MBR) lies in northern Utah, where the Bear River flows into the northeast arm of the Great Salt Lake. The Refuge protects the marshes found at the mouth of the Bear River; these marshes are the largest freshwater component of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Since these marshes are in turn surrounded by arid desert lands, it is little wonder that they have always been an oasis for waterfowl.
Refuge Access Road is Open
The county road used to access the Refuge auto tour route loop and hunting areas is open. Currently, two lanes are available for the entire length of the work area. Contractors will continue work through fall, installing culverts, hauling gravel and paving. The speed limit through the project area is 20 mph. Please observe this speed limit for the safety of both visitors and construction workers. Any work not completed before fall freeze up will commence again in the spring. This first phase of the road project will be complete by July, 2009. The second phase of the project will commence at that time, with work being done from the current construction area, east to the wildlife education center.
When complete, the entire county road from the Refuge's wildlife education center, west for 12 miles to the security gate, will be widened, raised in certain areas, and paved. The Refuge's auto tour route loop is not part of this road project, and will remain a gravel road.
It may be necessary in late October to again close one lane of the project area for a short period of time. An update to this announcement will be made if this occurs.
For information on projects and programs, contact the Refuge at (435) 723-5887. For current water conditions, see the Hunting section of this web site.

Throughout the refuge's long, rich past, it has not only been an oasis for shorebirds and waterfowl, but many people find solitude viewing the winter sun setting over the Promontory Mountains, or by watching a pair of American avocets dancing in spring.
