      About Us

Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge was established in the 1970s. Sauta Cave provides a summer roosting site for about 200,000 - 400,000 gray bats and a winter hibernacula for both the gray and Indiana bats. Above ground, the refuge protects the federally listed Price's potato-bean, and manages hardwood forest.

      What We Do

The predominant management activities are law enforcement and resource protection aimed at protecting crucial habitat of the gray and Indiana bats.

      Our Species

As is the case with many large caves, rare and unique species occur in Sauta Cave. As a result, the Alabama Natural Heritage Program ranks the cave's biodiversity as a site of very high significance.
