Group of visitors bird watching on a viewing platform at Back Bay NWR

Opportunities for wildlife observation are everywhere at the wildlife refuge, from the time you enter the gates to the border with False Cape State Park. The time of year will dictate the wildlife you may see – we recommend visiting every season! Several viewing platforms are located throughout the refuge on the Raptor, Sunset Point Overlook, Kuralt and Dune trails. The Wildlife Viewing Window, located one mile south of the Visitor Center and parking area, provides a special location for viewing wintering waterfowl when the Dike Trail system is closed. Additionally, fixed spotting scopes (binoculars) are located on the Visitor Center deck, the Dune Trail viewing platform and at the Wildlife Viewing Window to assist visitors in spotting and identifying distant wildlife. Keep an eye out for deer, raccoons, bobcats, turtles, frogs, river otters and, of course, a variety of birds!
