Overview:
Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located in northwestern Missouri within the historic Missouri River floodplain. The 7,350-acre refuge was established in 1935 as a resting, feeding, and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Many of the original facilities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s.
Getting There:
The refuge is located five miles south of Mound City, MO, and 30 miles north of St. Joseph, MO, just off of Interstate 29. Take exit 79, and drive 3 miles west on highway 159.
Hours of Operation:
Refuge Headquarters - Open 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Visitor Contact Station - Open 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday year-round and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm weekends from Mid-March to early May and Mid-October to early December. Wildlife Drive/Outdoor Facilities - Open daily, dawn to dusk (year-round).
Special Announcements:
Interpretative Programming: Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of November the refuge will be hosting interpretative programs at 1:30. Programs are free, open to the public and child friendly. Please join as are we learn about everything from tracking mammals to identifying our dabblers.Volunteer of the Year: For 2009 was recently awarded at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge during the volunteer recognition picnic on Saturday, October 17. This year Carrie Wilson, Mound City, was selected. She was one of more than 98 individuals that volunteered at least one hour during the past 12 months.
Eagle Days: December 5th & 6th all day event! This wonderful event is always held during the first weekend of December and is really the highlight of our year. Please join us as we enjoy the peak of our waterfowl migration and the 400 plus eagles that follow. We will have live eagle shows, guided bus tours, games, and even a chance to meet Puddles our refuge mascot (Click here for a list of Scheduled Events).
Eagle Day's Parking: Special parking is requested of large groups visiting the refuge for Eagle Days.
