Volunteer Position Overview
About This Position
The Ma-le’l Dunes Unit Visitor Services Volunteer RV Host lives in their own RV on site at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Ma-le’l Dunes Unit in Manila, California. The site provides electricity, sewer, and water and can accommodate up to 30 foot trailer or motorhome. The closest services (gas, groceries, medical) are a short 5-mile drive to Arcata CA.
Primary Duties for Full-time Residency
· Provide a minimum of 24 hours of service per week.
· Open/close Ma-le’l Dunes Unit gate Friday – Monday.
· Staff trails, entrance road and trailhead. Provide public awareness and understanding of the Refuge Complex including answering questions, providing information on educational and recreational opportunities, and informing visitors of rules and regulations and directing inquiries and concerns to staff.
· Keep the public restrooms clean and well-stocked, checking at least 4 times per week.
· Perform minor site maintenance, litter pick up, and trail clearing.
· Report any safety hazards to refuge staff.
· Provide information on refuge policy and attempt to correct minor infractions through interpretation. Volunteers will not engage in law enforcement or enforcement of regulations.
