  • Status of New 5-Year Review
In June 2017 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a Federal Register notice (https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2017-06-30/pdf/2017-13758.pdf) to solicit new scientific data to inform the 5-year review for the Florida panther. We received more than 80,000 public comments, including some that provided substantive information. To conduct a 5-year review, we rely on the best available information pertaining to taxonomy, life history and ecology, historical and current distribution, genetics, habitats and threats of this species. Because of the amount of new scientific data available since the last status review in 2009, and the factors that needed to be addressed in the review (e.g., advances in conservation, proposed taxonomy changes, changes in threats, etc.), we elected to develop a Species Status Assessment (SSA). A SSA is a scientifically rigorous characterization of a species’ current status as well as an assessment on the risk of extinction in the future. It presents a compilation of the best available information on a species, as well as its ecological needs, based on environmental factors. Drafting the SSA was a large undertaking. We are now drafting the 5-year review based on the information compiled for the SSA. The new 5-year review and the SSA should be available in 2021.
