New Boardwalk Trail to Open at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge
Dedication Ceremony Planned
Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge will be holding a dedication to celebrate the grand opening of the newly completed Nisqually Estuary Boardwalk Trail on February 1, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The dedication will be held at the beginning of the new boardwalk which is a 1-mile walk from the Visitor Center. The dedication will include speakers and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Visitors will then be able to walk the entire 1-mile long boardwalk, while observing the incoming tide. From the Visitor Center to the end of the boardwalk and back is a 4-mile walk.
In the fall of 2010, 762 acres of the Nisqually Delta were restored to tidal estuary. The Nisqually Estuary Boardwalk Trail will allow visitors to walk into the newly restored area to observe wildlife and to see the changes the twice a day tides bring to the landscape. The $2.8 million boardwalk construction project was funded almost entirely with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money. Trail features include a tower, an enclosed viewing blind, numerous pushouts, and two covered viewing platforms. The boardwalk was constructed by Five Rivers Construction, Inc. of Longview, Washington, with technical assistance from Ducks Unlimited.
After February 1, The Nisqually Estuary Trail will be open everyday from sunrise to sunset with a partial seasonal closure during the waterfowl hunt season from October to January. For questions about the trail or dedication ceremony, call (360) 753-9467.
NOTE: The event will take place at Nisqually NWR which is located at exit 114 on Interstate 5 near Olympia, Washington. The Nisqually Estuary Boardwalk Trail and dedication site can be accessed by walking one mile on the Twin Barns Loop and dike trail from the Refuge Visitor Center. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 12:15pm to allow time to walk to the site. This outdoor event will be held rain or shine.
