The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determined a "Finding of No Significant Impact" pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act for a proposal by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to transfer 40.51 acres to the Kansas Department of Transportation and to grant a temporary easement over 51.59 acres of property at the Marais des Cygnes State Wildlife Area. The land transfer and temporary easement will provide land for needed enhancements to a segment of Highway U.S. 69 which goes through the Marais des Cygnes wildlife area. In exchange, the Kansas Department of Transportation will transfer an adjacent 92.7-acre parcel to Kansas Wildlife and Parks to be added to the wildlife area.
The property was originally purchased by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks with federal assistance funds. The NEPA process requires any federally funded project be reviewed for potential impacts to the human environment.
Copies of the Services Finding of No Significant Impact document can be obtained from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, P.O. Box 25486, Attn: State Programs, Denver, CO 80225.
