Critical Habitat

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides final critical habitat designation information for threatened and endangered species across the United States using an online mapper and by providing data that can be downloaded for use in a GIS. You can find both the mapper and the data on the Critical Habitat Report web page that is part of our Environmental Conservation Online System.

Note: For species with surface and subsurface critical habitat units that overlap (i.e. some salamanders and aquatic invertebrates in central Texas) you will need to download the shapefile for the individual species in order to get both surface and subsurface critical habitat units. Due to generalization procedures that are intended to speed viewing on the web, the online mapper and the seamless composite shapefile for the U.S. only display subsurface units. For Austin Blind and Jollyville Plateau salamander critical habitat, you can view both surface and subsurface critical habitat using the Travis / Williamson Karst Zone and Salamander Critical Habitat Mapper below.

Karst Zones

Geographic Information System (GIS) Shapefiles for Karst Zones are available for download. Click below and 'Save Target As' to download the desired zip-compressed shapefiles.

A Mapping Application is available for those who do not have software capable of viewing GIS files. The link below provides a web mapper for the Bexar County and Travis / Williamson County karst zones. This mapper includes the Karst Fauna Regions and Critical Habitat as well. (Note that this application works best in Internet Explorer 9 or above, or the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox or Safari.) Please read disclaimer before using this application.
