  • Hurricane Irma and sea turtles

    This infographic discusses the impact of hurricanes in Florida during sea turtle nesting season, and asks that you never touch any exposed eggs or disturbed nests. Although nearly 90 percent of sea turtle nesting in the United States occurs in Florida in March through October, a major hurricane there during this period doesn’t mean all is lost. Mother sea turtles “hedge their bets” by depositing eggs in several nests over the course of the season, so there is a high probability that at least a few of the nests will incubate successfully even if a serious storm hits.  Learn more...

  • Hurricane Maria

    This infographic shows the eye of Hurricane Maria and details the Southeast region response. Maria made landfall over Puerto Rico as a Category 4 Hurricane impacting 57 employees, 15 field stations and 22,000 acres. The Southeast region assisted our neighbors in Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and St. Croix. The region accounted for all of our employees, helped FEMA with search and rescue, provided aerial transportation between islands, secured facilities with tarps and generators, provided security to DOI assets, enabled communication between local government and Service facilities, transported food, water and fuel, cleared roads, and stabilized facilities for Puerto Rican parrots.  Learn more...
