Automated Telemetry Detections

The map below presents initial tagging locations of migratory animals detected by radio telemetry towers operated by the Service’s Southeast Region National Wildlife Refuge System. This map is a visualization product/tool, so read the limitations of data use and disclaimers for more information.

Tips for interpretation

  • Points on the map indicate approximate tagging locations including date(s) of detection (not tagging) by a given tower
  • Tower icons indicate current tower locations

Tips for usage

  • Map layers are accessed via the “layers” icon in the upper right corner of the map.
  • Toggle the display of tower locations using the “Tower locations” check box
  • Toggle the display of detections for a given tower by clicking the corresponding check box; detection marker color corresponds to the tower of detection
  • Click on a tower icon for additional information for that radio telemetry tower
  • You can zoom in and out on the map using the + and - buttons
  • Points located close together are clustered at large scales. Clicking on these clusters will zoom to a level at which points can be distinguished
  • Return to the full extent of the map by clicking the globe icon below the legend

Data Limitations and User Caution

The Service’s objective of mapping automated telemetry detections is to produce a preliminary map of the initial tagging locations of individual animals detected by automated telemetry stations operated by the National Wildlife Refuge System in the southeast region. Points indicate approximate initial tagging locations with date(s) of detection (not tagging) by a given receiving station.

This interactive map is an ongoing effort consisting of data additions, updates, and other data modifications. This map visualizes an approximate tagging location of individual animals detected by automated telemetry stations operated by the National Wildlife Refuge System in the southeast region. The information contained in the map is dynamic and changes over time. It is the responsibility of the user to use the map appropriately and consistently within the limits of the data. Conclusions drawn from use of this map and data are the user’s responsibility. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described, visualized, and/or contained herein. These data and maps are not legal documents and are not intended to be used as such.

Please note that according to the Motus Collaboration Policy, January 2016, the location data belongs to those individuals or organizations deploying the transmitters, and that:

“All investigators and other users of Motus data are expected to exhibit professional courtesy and utilize the data within the bounds of the highest scientific integrity. In particular, information about foreign tags beyond that which is obtainable from the public visualizations should not be used in unpublished technical reports or popular or scientific publications without the permission of the principle investigator. The process for requesting such permission will be managed through the Motus web-site.” Cited from Motus Collaboration Policy, January 2016.
