  Recreation and Education Opportunities

Environmental Education
School groups interested in conducting environmental education on the refuge are welcome and encouraged to contact the refuge manager at 618/997 3344, x342, for additional information.

Recreational fishing is allowed on Harlow and Wilkinson islands during daylight hours, in accordance with State regulations.

Hunting for big game, migratory birds, and upland game is allowed on certain portions of the refuge in accordance with State seasons and regulations. Each division has its own specific regulations, and some seasons are closed on certain refuge tracts. Hunters are encouraged to contact the refuge manager at 618/997 3344, x342, for more information.

Interpretive programs, displays, and brochures are planned for the refuge. Interpretive signs and brochures are being developed and will be available for the public soon.

Wildlife Observation
Wildlife observation and photography are encouraged on the refuge. Public wildlife viewing areas will be developed as time and resources permit. An active bald eagle nest on Wilkinson Island may be easily seen from the public levee road, and many migratory birds may be easily seen using refuge wetlands throughout the year.

Refuge Headquarters (located at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge) - Open 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday. The refuge is open one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset.

There is no entrance fee.
