  Recreation and Education Opportunities

Environmental Education
A 44-acre former plant site owned by DaimlerChrysler Corporation and located on the lower Detroit River, was acquired by Wayne County. This significant riverfront parcel will serve as the gateway to the refuge and will eventually house its headquarters and visitor center. Environmental education activities will be undertaken as outlined in the Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP).

Public access is currently limited. Special use permits are required for entry to most units. Lake Erie Metro Park unit is open to the public and offers exceptional birding and environmental education opportunities. The refuge friends group, call the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance, sponsors an annual Paddle By Your Refuge in September. The refuge also partners in the annual Point Mouillee Waterfowl Festival, Christmas Bird Counts, Audubon birding events, the annual Hawkfest, and Lotus tours.
