  Recreation and Education Opportunities

Environmental Education
The refuge provides information and guidance to teachers and educational groups planning to conduct outdoor classroom activities. Throughout the refuge trails, auto tour route, and pullouts, interpretive panels describe wildlife, plants, and habitats.

No fishing opportunities exist at the refuge.

No hunting opportunities exist at the refuge.

Ankeny Refuge has several miles of hiking trails, boardwalks, observation blinds, and platforms that take you closer to the wildlife on the refuge. Interpretive panels along trails, at kiosks, and at parking areas describe the wildlife and habitats on the refuge.

Wildlife Observation
County roads passing through the refuge provides wildlife/wildlands observation opportunities, and are open year-round. Year-round access is also provided at two kiosks. One trail and an adjacent bulletin board are open to the public from April 1 through September 30.
