National Public Lands Day
Many refuges will host public events on Saturday, September 28 to mark National Public Lands Day, which encourages people to get out and experience America’s outdoors. Among refuge events planned:
- Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, WI
- Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, TX
- Big Muddy National Fish & Wildlife Refuge, MO
- Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, MO
- Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, IN
- DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, IA
- Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge, WI Saturday, September 28
9:30 a.m. to noon
Help refuge staff remove invasive plants on the refuge. Long pants, sturdy shoes, and gloves are recommended. All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Meet at the Egret Trail floating boardwalk parking lot along the auto tour off Hwy 49.
9 to 11 a.m.
Take part in a trash cleanup at the Hwy 105 Trinity River Bridge. Aluminum cans and metal will be recycled. Bring gloves; plastic bags will be provided. More information: Stuart Marcus at 936/336-9786.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join in events including tree and native plant planting, trash removal and environmental education.
8 a.m. to noon
Join a refuge volunteer project from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Then attend a free program, Mushrooms at Mingo, offered by the Missouri Mycological Society. Finally, join a refuge ranger for birdwatching from the Monopoly Overlook.
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join refuge staff in a cleanup of DeSoto and Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuges. Pull invasive plants. Earn conservation community service hours and learn about other refuge volunteer opportunities available throughout the year. Lunch is provided.
