The goal of this project is to restore globally rare pitch pine community by removing non-native black pines. The black pines were planted as for dune stabilization after an escaped fire burned through the Pitch Pine Dune Woodland. We plan to remove the black pines and plant pitch pine saplings in there place. We have begun efforts to restore 10 acres, but plan to ultimately restore 50 acres of this rare habitat.

Volunteers are needed to cut and remove black pines from the resoration site, to plant the pitch pine saplings, and to nurture the saplings until they are established.
Total Number of Volunteers: 20 to date, 25 more expected
Total Number of Volunteer Hours: 60 to date, 130 more expected

We have worked with the Salisbury Community Service Program to prepare the site for pitch pine planting. We will partner with refuge volunteers and student groups to plant and care for the pitch pine saplings.
