Working with volunteers to map invasive plant species on Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Invasive plants are mapped in the field utilizing both hardware and software technology. The handheld units used are the Dell Axim PDA and the Recon TDS pocket pc. The handheld units are equipped with GPS flashcards and both ArcPad and WIMS software. WIMS (Weed Inventory Management System) is an access relational database program used for the collection of field data, analyzing invasive distribution, and generating GIS shape files. Before volunteers are sent into the field they are trained in use of the handheld units, basic GIS knowledge, WIMS database, ArcPad software and plant identification. The volunteers are then given designated areas within the refuge to inventory. If invasive plant species are discovered, then they are mapped using the handheld units. The collected information is then imported into the main GIS computer and field checked for errors. From this information GIS shape files can be generated for the Refuge to show invasive plant distribution by either specific area or by species. In addition to GIS shape files, a comprehensive database can be complied, for the Refuge, utilizing the WIMS program.

Describe the type of work the volunteers performed. (Up to 150 words)
The main involvement of the volunteers is to map invasive plant species on Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Before the volunteers are sent into the field they are given a training section in the use of the handheld units, basic GIS knowledge, WIMS database, ArcPad software and plant identification. The volunteers are then given designated areas within the refuge to inventory. The area is inventoried by either ATV, boat, or by walking. If an invasive plant species is discovered, then the volunteers map the plant species with both an occurrence (location of invasive, GIS waypoint) and an assessment (extent of the invasive patch, polygon). At Ottawa NWR invasive plants are usually mapped as either a single plant/tree/shrub or as a large patch. At the end of the day the handheld units are imported into the WIMS program on the main GIS computer. The collected data is checked for errors.

The project funds allowed for the continuation of mapping invasive plant species by volunteers and staff on Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. For the 2006 field season roughly 2,000 acres were inventoried for key invasive plant species, with roughly 250 acres of invasive species mapped. GIS shape files for the Refuge have been generated to show current invasive species distribution by either specific area or species type. In addition to GIS shape files, a comprehensive database has been complied for the Refuge regarding collected information for each invasive plant occurrence and assessment. Refuge staff were able to treat infested areas in the 2006 field season due to the direct result of volunteers and staff inventorying and mapping invasive species on Ottawa NWR. Of the roughly 250 acres of invasive species mapped during the 2006 field season, roughly 200 acres were treated by either mechanical, fire, bio-control, or chemical application. Due to the efforts of the Invasive Species Mapping Project both volunteers and Refuge staff are more conscious of the impacts of invasive plants on native habitats. During the 2006 field season two early detection plant species (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae and Polygonum cuspidatum) were discovered.

How useful was this program for meeting refuge invasive species objectives and how can it be improved?
More effort should be placed on recruiting new potential volunteers for the project and working on educational outreach involving the community.
