Project Title: Control of Alligatorweed in Moist-soil Habitats

Tennessee NWR is a major wintering area for waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway and provides for the needs of many other species of waterbirds, including rails, shorebirds, and herons within diverse wetland habitats. Alligatorweed, an invasive exotic plant, is degrading much of the moist-soil habitats to a point that they are no longer desirable to many migratory birds. Alligatorweed impacts over 400 acres of wetland habitats on the refuge. A comprehensive inventory of the wetland habitats in the Duck River Unit of the refuge is needed to fully document the extent of the impact of this plant species. GPS and GIS technology will be used to mark and map all locations. Control measures will then be employed for up to 20 acres, mostly in isolated drainage ditches and other areas difficult to treat by aerial methods. Habitat, Renovate, and Aquaneat, aquatic labeled herbicides, will be spot sprayed using backpack sprayers and tractor and ATV mounted boom sprayers. Inventory efforts will be accomplished during early June and chemical treatment will occur during June and July. Test plots were established to monitor the effectiveness of each herbicide over the next few years. Data was collected on these plots prior to treatment and one month post-treatment. Additional monitoring will occur in October 2005 and during the 2006 growing season.

One volunteer on this project assisted with marking infestations using a GPS unit and spot treatment isolated patches of alligatorweed with herbicide using a backpack sprayer. The other volunteer assisted with setting up the study to monitor the effectiveness of the three herbicides and data collection. His work will continue through the 2006 growing season and will involve data analysis and a final report.

Project Results:
Give an overview of the results of the project. Include quantifiable measure of success, such as maps produced, efficacy of control measures, number of sites where invasions were detected early and responded to, number of community contacts, etc. (Up to 250 words).
A total of 418 acres of alligatorweed infestations were inventoried and mapped. GPS locations were acquired for all known infestations and entered into ArcGIS to produce three maps. A total of 213 acres were treated with herbicide, 183 acres aerially sprayed using a helicopter and 30 acres were treated by ground methods using tractor, ATV, and backpack sprayers. Test plots were established to monitoring the effectiveness of different herbicides and rates. The treatments were as fallows: Habitat at 2 pts/ac.; Habitat at 4 pts/ac.; Aquaneat (Glyphosate) at 3 qts/ac.; Aquaneat  2 split treatments at 1.5 qts/ac.; and Renovate at 4 qts/ac. The first phase of monitoring in 2005 revealed that Habitat appears to provide the best control with no resprouting of alligatorweed. Renovate had a resprout rate between 15-25% and Aquaneat had the poorest control with a resprout rate greater than 25%. Monitoring of the plots was conducted a year after treatment in October 2006. Test results revealed that Habitat at 4 pints/acre continued to perform the best with an 85% decline in alligatorweed. Aquaneat with two split treatments of 1.5 quarts/acre provided the second most effective control with a 75% decline in alligatorweed. The other treatments all provided similar control results and were as follows: Aquaneat at 3 quarts/acre 42% decline; Habitat at 2 pints/acre 43% decline, and Renovate at 4 quarts/acre 41% decline.
