Project Title: Invasive Species Control and Planning
Region: 5
Station: Wallkill River NWR
Contact Person:
Name and Phone Number
Edward Henry 973 702 7266
Project Description:
(Up to 250 words)
The refuge will mechanically control invasives plants, multiflora rose and stiltgrass in particular, on bog turtle habitat. The volunteers will be trained to monitor and document the impacts of invasive species control on fenced-in sites, which are also being grazed by cattle to help control invasives and create a microtopography more suited to bog turtles. In the growing season of FY2006, we will use interns to spray, mechanically control and remove invasives from the refuge. Sites will be selected based on their ability to improve habitat for known and potential bog turtle sites along with some habitats for grassland birds.
