What is the Tualatin River NWR Veterans Day Bird Walk?

This is an opportunity for military veterans, and active duty personnel, to join staff and volunteers at the Refuge to learn about birding. This event is geared towards those that may be interested in learning this skill and have never tried it before, or just aren't sure where to begin.

When is it?

Sunday, November 10, 2019; 9:30 AM-12:00 PM

Where is it?

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge

19255 SW Pacific Hwy

Sherwood, OR 97140

Who should come?

  • Veterans and active duty personnel who have an interest in getting outside and learning a new skill.
  • This will be an introductory level event, so no experience is necessary.

How does the Veterans Day Bird Walk work?

The day begins inside the Refuge Visitor Center with an overview of birding from a biologist from the Region's Migratory Bird Program. This overview will provide the foundation for the day; an explanation of what birding is all about, some of the more nuanced parts of birding, how to use binoculars and tips to get you started. Following the introduction, participants will be teamed up with staff and volunteers to get out on the trail for small group mentoring. You will travel the year round trail putting some of your new skills to work and learning additional tips from your mentor. We will end the day back in the Visitor Center to answer questions and wrap up the day.

What is the schedule for the day?

9:30 AM - Overview session and questions in the Visitor Center
10:15 AM - Separate into mentor groups and leave for the trail
11:45 AM - Gather back at the Refuge Visitor Center to wrap up the morning

What should I bring?

  • Appropriate clothing for the weather (we will be outside rain or shine)
  • Snacks if you would like to have something on the trail
  • There is no need to bring your own binoculars, we will provide a pair for you (if you want to bring your own that is fine as well)
