Seney National Wildlife Refuge Photo Contest

Cancelled for 2021
Laura Gasaway - Landscape

We are so sorry to all of our photographers. We love to see your work and we are looking forward to having a photo contest again next year. This year with our smaller than usual staff, our new building planning, and demolition of our old building in September we will need this time to close down our visitor center and move out. Please excuse us as we are doing our best to make sure our new facilities meet all of your expectations.

Contest Rules and Regulations

You’re invited to participate in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge’s Photo Contest. The sole purpose of the contest is to encourage you to participate in nature photography. Up to five entries per person may be submitted - no more than three per category with exception of the youth category. This year we have decided to split the wildlife category in two because of the number of entries we have been receiving. Starting in 2020 there will be a “Birds” category and a “Wildlife” category that will encompass all other wild animals. Photos may be entered into any of the following categories:

  • Wildlife (Mammals, Reptiles & Amphibians, Spiders, Insects, etc.)
  • Birds
  • Public Use/Recreation
  • Landscape
  • Plants/Plant-like Organisms (Wildflowers, Lichens, Liverworts, Fungi, etc.)
  • Special Assignments (changes annually): 2020 Home Sweet Home (a photo of an animal home or a photo taken at your home) and 2021 Bugs
  • Youth (17 and under)
  1. All entries must be photographs taken at Seney National Wildlife Refuge, the Whitefish Point Unit, Huron National Wildlife Refuge, Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge or the Kirtland’s Warbler Wildlife Management Area for all categories other than “Home Sweet Home.”
  2. Photos entered in the “Special Assignments Category: 2020 Home Sweet Home” can be taken anywhere, your home, your friend’s home, your neighborhood, etc.
  3. The Special Assignment Category may be interpreted in any way you choose. An animal’s home or your home.
  4. Up to five entries per person may be submitted - no more than three per category with the exception of the youth category. Youth may enter up to five photos in the Youth Category. A youth is considered anyone under the age of 18.
  5. For 2020 all entries must be submitted by email. If you are unable to submit your photo via email you may send a hard copy to the refuge to be scanned. (See the address on the back of the brochure.)
  6. Photos that have been altered to combine two or more photos will be disqualified. Photos that use replication or other techniques to add details to a photo will be disqualified.
  7. Anyone whose photo has been disqualified will be notified before the voting begins.
  8. Please email electronic copies to seney@fws.gov, the subject line should read “Photo Contest Entry.”
  9. Please include the title of your photo(s) in your entry.
  10. Entries are accepted year-round.
  11. All entries must be received by August 31.
  12. If a minor is pictured in a photo, an “Agreement for Use of Likeness in Audio/Visual Products” (Form 3-2260) must accompany the entry. See the forms included in this brochure.
  13. All entries will be retained by the refuge and may be used for a variety of reasons including but not limited to publications, webpages, and presentations.
