Fall Color Float

September 29th, 2018
Canoeing on the Manistique River Take a beautiful float down the Manistique River and see the fall colors. Join refuge staff for a 4-5 hour canoe/kayak trip September 29th, 2018. Fall is a beautiful time to visit the refuge. Hopefully we will catch the leaves changing color. Pack a lunch, dress for the weather (could be warm or cool), and remember to call or email us ahead of time so we know that you're coming. Bring your own boat or rent one from one of the local outfitters. The Fall Color Float will depart from one of the outfitters in Germfask, MI at 11 am and end at the Mead Creek Campground between 3 and 4. Please be ready to depart at that time.

Weather Issues

Contact the Visitor Services Manager to sign up and for more details. There are local outfitters in Germfask who offer canoe and kayak rentals as well as shuttle service.

Participants should:

  • have experience paddling, because of the chill in the air,
  • bring a lunch and water,
  • be prepared for extreme weather conditions (cold and wet),
  • wear layers of non-absorbant clothing (jeans, sweatshirts, cotton t-shirts are not ideal - choose fleece, wool, or nylon)
  • bring a hat for sun, a knit hat for warmth, a pair of gloves
  • bring a change of clothes in a water tight bag - people have fallen in the water on past trips and it is miserable and even dangerous if you don't have warm dry clothes to change into
  • all participants are required to wear life jackets

We have enjoyed the "Fall Color Float" on days as cold as 40°F. As long as you dress appropriately it is still a lovely day.
