    Landscape-level conservation is a broad approach to managing for wildlife.  Wildlife do not recognize refuge boundaries.  Roanoke River is one of a group of 12 national wildlife refuges and one national fish hatchery in eastern North Carolina.  This leaflet contains contact information and directions to each site.  These refuges are represented at the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center in Manteo.  Information about these special places is available in National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina

  • National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center


    The National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center serves as a gateway to eleven national wildlife refuges in eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia and Edenton National Fish Hatchery.  The refuges include Back Bay and Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia and Mackay Island, Currituck, Pea Island, Alligator River, Pocosin Lakes, Roanoke River, Mattamuskeet, Swanquarter, and Cedar Island in North Carolina.  This leaflet provides information about things for you to experience on these sites.
