Fishing is a popular activity among both lone anglers and families. As with hunting, State regulations apply. Fishing is allowed on Pungo and New Lakes from March 1 through October 31 only. All other waters are open year round. Fishing in canals is popular during spring and summer months. Primary species caught include black fish, black crappie, several species of sunfish, and catfish. Fishing on New Lake is permitted, but access is difficult.
Fishing is allowed 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset only. A signed Refuge Fishing Permit is required to fish on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. You may pick up a permit in person at refuge headquarters in Columbia or download on-line. The downloaded version has been redesigned to print onto 8.5 X 11 inch paper, for your convenience.
