Endangered and Threatened Species

Pea Island provides habitat during some times of the year for a number of threatened and endangered species, as well as additional species of "special concern."

Endangered and Threatened species on Pea Island include all of the sea turtles that nest here in the summer - mostly loggerheads, but occasional greens and leatherbacks.

The refuge offers nesting, resting and feeding areas for piping plovers.

Species of special concern include least terns and American Oystercatchers.
