Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge is an ideal place for family-friendly recreation. Give you child the precious gift of time in nature and make the outdoors a part of your everyday life!

Junior Ranger Program

Kids ages 3 through 13 can become a Junior Ranger (and older kids are welcome to participate too!). Fun activities in the workbook can be done while exploring the refuge with parents. Participants receive a completion certificate and a badge upon completion. This popular program is FREE!

Summer Activities

During the Summer months, we typically offer activities oriented toward kids including Little Environmentalist, Crafts for Cubs, Nature Scout, Safari Adventure, and the week long Camp ORI. Many of our other events and activities are also kid friendly. Check out the Events Calendar section of our website for details!

Aquarium and Turtles

Our Visitor Center has many educational exhibits including a 1,200 gallon fish tank, which contains a mix of species from the Ohio River. We also have two turtle tanks. Our Musk Turtle and Eastern Spiny Soft Shell Turtle are both fascinating for kids. Coming during our Saturday afternoon feeding (3 pm) to see them when they are most lively!

Explorer Backpacks

Available in the Visitor Center, these backpacks contain ID guides and other tools kids can take on the trails.
