U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeking comments on proposal to collect recreation fees at two southern Nevada wildlife refuges

LAS VEGAS — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is accepting public comments on a proposal to collect recreations fees from visitors to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge and the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge in southern Nevada. The 30-day comment period runs from August 5 to September 4, 2021.

While the Service was authorized to collect recreation fees in 1987, this is the first time the fees have been proposed for the two southern Nevada wildlife refuges. Since 1997, the Service has been able to retain fees collected at wildlife refuges under the authority of the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. The Act provides funding for recreation program improvements. Typical projects paid for by recreation fee funds include road and visitor facility maintenance, brochure and interpretive material production, and law enforcement.

To better manage the use of wildlife refuge facilities and to continue to maintain the facilities for the visiting public, the Service is proposing the following recreation fee structure:

For the Desert NWR:

- $10.00 per vehicle

- $5.00 per motorcycle

- No charge for bicycles

For the Pahranagat NWR:

- $10.00 per vehicle per night for camping

The fees for Desert NWR would also be paid through the purchase of an America the Beautiful - The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.

A recreation fee analysis was completed by Service staff, and the proposed fees are based on what other nearby recreational facilities and national wildlife refuges charge. The Service is proposing to implement the fees on October 1, 2022.
