The Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex Hunting Regulations provides a more in depth explanation of hunting rules and requirements and also functions as a special use permit. This form is required to be signed and with you whenever hunting on the refuge.

A signed Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex Hunting Regulations  form is required before hunting on the refuge.

Hunting is allowed in designated areas of the Refuge during certain times of the year. Seasons and bag limits are within the guidelines established by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission but are generally more conservative to assure compatibility with other refuge objectives. The Refuge's hunting program is reviewed annually, and consists of the following:

  • Big Game: Archery hunt for white-tailed deer, open October 1 through the Friday before the LA Coastal zone waterfowl season
  • Waterfowl (ducks, geese, gallinules & coots): Youth & senior lottery hunts (application information here). Participants are chosen by lottery drawing to fill 5 hunt blinds on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
  • Other migratory birds: Hunting for snipe is permitted during the remaining portion of the State-designated season. Hunting for dove is permitted during the first split of the State-designated season. All state regulations are applicable for these two hunts.
  • Alligator lottery hunt- State designated season, generally around August/September.
