The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of its designation as the first Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network in the Caribbean! Based on scientific criteria and information provided by the Puerto Rico Ornithological Society, Inc., the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats were officially nominated by Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) as a "site of Regional Importance". This is an international conservation strategy with the mission of conserving shorebird species and their habitats by designating a network of key places in the whole American continent. The WHSRN includes 81 sites in 12 countries and partners that conserve and manage more than 12 million hectares of essential habitat for shorebird species.

The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, which are an important and extensive part of the Cabo Rojo NWR, received this designation in February 2010 and became the first Caribbean site in the network. The importance of the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats for the shorebirds was reflected in the Hemispheric Council's unanimous approval. The Cabo Rojo NWR continues collaborating with the Puerto Rico Ornithological Society, Inc., the Caborroje├▒os Pro-Salud Y Ambiente and other partners to maintain this important designation.
