Area closures will be in effect for the following hunt dates:
Elk hunt 2 - January 9-11, 2018


Most of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge’s public use area will be closed for a few days in January while the Refuge conducts a controlled elk hunt. This hunt, which is conducted in cooperation with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, is an important part of the elk management on the Refuge.

The controlled elk hunt will be conducted January 9-11, 2018. All of the Refuge’s public use areas west of the Visitor Center will be closed to other public uses during this hunt. The closed areas include Quanah Parker Lake and Dam, Boulder Picnic area, Lost Lake, Burford Lake, Osage Lake, French Lake, Burma Road, the Narrows, Bison Trail, Elk Mountain, Treasure Lake, Post Oak Lake, and Charon’s Garden Wilderness Area. All of the public use areas east of the Visitor Center will remain open to the public during this hunt. These areas include Mt. Scott, Jed Johnson Lake and Rush Lake.
