Special Events

Egrets foraging in the shallows

The refuge hosts and participates in many special events throughout the year that are fun for the whole family!

The events listed below are a few of the nation-wide programs the refuge supports but check the Events Calendar for more information on other scheduled programs and events.

National Public Lands Day (September)
The last Saturday of September is a trash cleanup day on Hwy 105 at the Trinity River bridge. The public cleanup event is part of National Public Lands Day.

National Wildlife Refuge Week (October)
As part of National Wildlife Refuge Week, a national week for celebrating the Refuge System, Trinity River Refuge hosts a “Big Sit” -- anyone with an interest sit in a 17-foot diameter circle to identify all the birds they see or hear during a 24-hour (or less) period. Refuge week activities at the refuge also include a popular Butterfly Count and butterfly enthusiasts of Southeast Texas join the refuge on their Annual Trinity River Butterfly Count. National Wildlife Refuge Week is typically the second full week of October.

Christmas Bird Count (December)
The refuge hosts an Annual Trinity River Christmas Bird Count for northern Liberty County in late December. Birdwatchers of all levels are welcome for this all-day count.
