About the Refuge

Stewart Lake National Wildlife Refuge is in Slope County, approximately 8 miles southwest of Amidon, ND. The Refuge was established by Executive Order on February 3, 1941, and is administered as part of the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

Stewart Lake Refuge is 2,230 acres in size, with 2,033 acres of native grasslands, tame grasses, and rock outcroppings surrounding the 197 acre Stewart Lake. Stewart Lake is the largest wetland on the refuge, and is the major water bird oasis in the area. The lake is impounded by an earthen dam containing a spillway and a low level outlet.
