Permits

A special use permit is required for certain activities that occur on the refuge.

To participate in hunting programs at the refuge (September to March), hunters should email the Visitor Services Manager or call 860-399-2513 to obtain the latest flyers/permits.

Overnight environmental education programs also occur on the refuge, typically at the Calf Island Unit in Greenwich. These are curriculum-based programs, lead by scout troops and similar organizations, where overnight stays are allowed to accommodate the group’s desire to conduct lessons and observe wildlife in the evenings and early mornings. Approval for these programs, and a free permit, may be obtained from the Visitor Services Manager.
