Urban Refuge Program

Patuxent has been partnering with two separate entities in recent months. The refuge has hired an urban refuge intern to work with Fairfax County, Virginia Public Schools to provide quality environmental educational experiences for students, technical expertise to teachers and faculty, and promote the National Wildlife Refuge System’s role in creating environmental awareness among urban populations.
The refuge is also working with Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center in Baltimore, providing technical assistance and internships to aide their delivery of environmental messages to underserved communities near Baltimore Harbor.

Internship notice:
The Urban Conservation and Education Internship is an eight week program in partnership with the Maryland Port Administration, Living Classrooms Foundation, the National Aquarium and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide local college students with a combination of knowledge and experiences that they can use to become stewards of the environment.
